Helping Londoners to flourish
Tube Lines is a leading player in the largest improvement programme the Tube has ever seen.
Upgrade & maintenance work
The Tube is the oldest and largest underground metro system in the world, having helped Londoners about their daily business for nearly 150 years. Working in partnership with London Underground, we’re transforming it into a transport network fit for the 21st century.
Our focus is to rebuild the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines. These are three of the busiest lines on the network and some of the most heavily used transport arteries in the UK. Our mission is to speed up travel for the 1.9 million commuters, residents and visitors to the capital who use these lines every day (which accounts for more than half the passenger traffic on the Underground). To put our role into perspective, we’re responsible for:
- 320 km of track
- 255 trains
- 100 stations
- 2,395 bridges and structures
- 227 escalators
- 82 lifts
Delivering an outstanding Tube for London is a project as complex as any in the engineering sector. We’re drawing on award-winning innovations and technologies to make sure work is completed on time and to budget, but we are trying to redress years of under-investment in the transport system.
And that’s not the only challenge we face. The London Underground was an engineering marvel in its day. However, the narrow Victorian tunnels which are still in use today make maintenance a painstaking exercise, while the lack of extra tunnels (like they have in New York) means trains have to stop running before work can start. We have to carry out our essential maintenance between 12.30am and 5am.
