Championing our transport system
Since 2003, we’ve invested more than £4.4bn (or a staggering £1.6m a day) to transform the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines. And this investment has upgraded them at a scale and pace never seen before.
We can be rightly proud of our achievements as champions of London’s transport system. We’ve overhauled our ways of working to increase efficiency, upgraded large parts of the network and cut overall delays on our three lines by 57 per cent over the past seven years.
We have now upgraded 96 of the stations on our lines to schedule, including some of our busiest – Waterloo, London Bridge and Camden Town. As well as increasing the number of CCTV cameras by 300 per cent to make stations safer, we have introduced numerous passenger help points, information boards and new seating. We have carried out over 140 escalator interventions, 50 of which were major refurbishments; in so doing we have slashed escalator refurbishment times from the traditional 26 weeks to as little as 10 weeks, earning us a top award from the Institution of Engineering and Technology. We’ve also replaced or refurbished over 100km of track, helping boost service reliability and make journeys smoother.
On the Jubilee line we’ve added an extra carriage to all trains on the line and introduced four brand new trains to increase capacity by 17 per cent, as well as increasing the capacity of Wembley Park station by 70 per cent to support the new national stadium. A new signalling system for the line is scheduled to be completed in 2011 which will deliver reduced journey times and additional capacity.
Investment in the 71 km Piccadilly line has resulted in record breaking performance and an increase in reliability of 70 per cent. We also helped deliver the signalling to support the extension of the line to Heathrow Terminal 5.
We have turned the Northern line, which was previously known for its poor performance, into one of the best performing lines with a 65 per cent increase in reliability. The installation of a new signalling system is underway which will further increase capacity, reduce journey times and improve reliability.
We’ve done a lot already – but there is more to be done, much more. If you’re passionate about making things happen for London, come and help us do it.
