Yagnik Pandit
Assistant Technical Manager
Degree - Mechanical Engineering, University of Hertfordshire
My name is Yagnik Pandit and I am a student of Mechanical Engineering from University of Hertfordshire. I am doing my placement year as an Assistant Technical Manager on the assurance side in the PCMW (Premises, Civils & Minor works) Department.
When I started looking for my placement I had a very open view and was ready for all the new challenges and fields that I could work in, not just Mechanical Engineering. I was offered seven other positions in different companies, mainly concentrating on the Mechanical side, but when I got the offer from Tube Lines it attracted me straight away because the role contained many different fields of engineering. I also felt that to work in London and for London would bring pride in itself.
To describe my role briefly, I work as a four links connector, working for the project managers and assisting my Technical Manager in looking after the assurance side of the projects and getting the contractors to deliver the things on time. So far I have done about 14 projects in various streams and at different locations, with five of those being major projects at Heathrow, Kingsbury, Colliers Wood, Tufnell Park and Acton Town. They all had their different requirements and challenges, but the best project was at Colliers Wood where I worked on a very critical and hot issue for London Underground, the 'Cooling the Tube' project. I was so glad and impressed with the systems we had in place and the efforts of the company to ensure its success.
The company's goal is to provide maximum training and support to each of its employees in order to make them feel comfortable and capable to handle various issues in various disciplines and situations. I received a variety of different training in aspects such as Go Green, Asbestos, CDM, Health and safety, and there are many more to do.
The whole of the company work as a team and the seniors and the superiors are always there to assist you. They are always ready to guide you and show you the right way of doing things. The faith that people have shown in me and the responsibilities that I have been given have made me proud and have given me sense of real life and the business issues which you can not know until you put yourself in the system.
Working for Tube Lines has given me pride and confidence because of the reputation of the company and the role I was given. The work I have done, I could never have learnt in theory. I can see myself definitely coming back to such a wonderful place after my graduation if I will be given a chance.
The job requires initiative, time management, confidence, excellent communication and negotiation skills.
The one thing that I would like to tell everyone joining the company is “ be prepared for the challenges.”
