“Nothing is impossible, but you have to be determined to get to where you want to be”
“There's never any danger of going stale at Tube Lines. It was the variety of works that attracted me in the first place, and that's certainly what I've experienced in my five placements. Each placement gave me a solid foundation in a particular area and equipped me with new skills. I initially joined the New Works department in South Quay, working on a building services design. Then I moved to Escalator Services in Acton, helping with the design of the escalator test rig. From there to Golders Green to work as part of the Northern line rolling stock team, and onto Project Functions to deal with the Periodic Review of our Public-Private Partnership contract. My final placement was in Premises, Civils & Minor Works, where I dealt with different assurance issues.
“The training I received ran parallel with the placements. During the programme, I attended one or two training sessions every three months, covering areas such as safety, soft skills and IT as well as the technical side. I've attended external seminars and conferences, and my mentor has been brilliant in giving me guidance on professional development for my Chartership. Nothing is handed to you on a plate, however. It's really down to you to decide what kind of training you undertake.
“That's the thing about Tube Lines: nothing is impossible, but you have to be determined to get to where you want to be. I've recently finished my graduate programme and am now in a permanent position. It's hard to believe that just two years after joining Tube Lines I'm responsible for more than 30 projects and six team members. It's definitely challenging but when you see a project through from initial sketch to completed works, it's also very gratifying.”
