“It's been a steep learning curve and I have targets to meet – but that's what keeps me motivated”
“Noise, waste, pollution, wildlife, energy – the environmental impacts of our work are huge and diverse. In my role, I help to manage these impacts without compromising our efforts to build a better Tube network.
“I've looked into how climate has an affect on our assets, written articles and press releases on the work we're doing to protect the environment, and liaised with journalists to make sure we get maximum coverage of our activities. Night visits have been a regular feature of my job, mostly for audit and monitoring purposes but sometimes for observation to better understand a site or activity – and I've walked in tunnels, worked under escalators and also trained operatives on an overnight shift. It's a fascinating role, which involves working with a wide range of people, internally and externally. You also realise how important it is to be diplomatic, as there is a lot of negotiating between parties to reach a consensus on what can or cannot be done.
“I joined the Environment team for the third of my placements. My first was in business planning, where I was involved in writing the annual asset management plan for lifts and escalators, making presentations to the executive and mapping maintenance cycles by working with lift and escalator engineers. I feel I was given just the right amount of responsibility: I was allowed to show what I could do, but I never felt out of depth. The training has helped, of course, and in my time here I've attended courses on everything from PR to writing for the web. It's been a steep learning curve and I have targets to meet – but that's what keeps me motivated.”
