“There's no such thing as a bad placement: every project you're involved in contributes to the greater good of the Tube network”

“At my interview, the dynamism of the company and the enthusiasm of the people came across loud and clear. I could also feel the company's passion for turning graduates into top-notch engineers through a combination of varied placements, a knowledgeable mentor and internal and external training courses.

“Right from the start, I was encouraged to build up my experience to become a fully fledged systems engineer. To my surprise, I was given the big responsibility on my first placement of assisting systems architects to prepare the overhaul of London Underground's communications system. I then joined the Signal & Electrical group, before taking placements in the Permanent CRID (current rail indicator device) project, Business Planning and Station Modernisation. The fact is, there's no such thing as a bad placement: every project you're involved in contributes to the greater good of the Tube network by improving safety, upgrading the system and enhancing the passenger experience.

“As well as enjoying a tremendous variety of placements, I've received plenty of in-house training and been sponsored by Tube Lines to attend numerous conferences, gaining knowledge I've been able to put into practice. I'm now back where I did my first placement, working as a systems engineer on the Jubilee and Northern line upgrade project. It's been a memorable two years (well, the chill breeze and flickering lights of disused and haunted stations do tend to stick in the memory!) and I'm proud to have played my part in turning round the Underground. In my career, I'm exactly where I expected to be when I joined; now the aim is to become Chartered in a further two years.”
