“I looked at quite a few of the big engineering firms, but what appealed to me about Tube Lines was that the graduate scheme was so well structured. Rotating around various placements gives you a great opportunity to test the water, and with the advice I've been given by my mentor, I've been able to decide on the career path that's right for me.”

“In my first placement, I worked on the Lift & Escalator inspection and assessment Programme – doing the initial desktop stuff, then carrying out the inspection, before finally producing the assessment report, so it was good to be involved from start to finish. My second placement was spent in Core Engineering before I moved into Tunnels, again working on an assessment programme. When I joined, the programme had been severely delayed. It was a real challenge completing the assessment on schedule – but we did it.

“It's important to get as much training as possible under your belt during the scheme, and in all my placements I've received plenty of on-the-job instruction. I've been given as much responsibility as any other discipline engineer and, overall, I must have been on 30 to 40 night visits to supervise work or carry out inspections. There's always plenty to do, but the culture is such that you want to work for your manager. I'm now looking to gain membership of the IStructE and build on my experience, hopefully taking on more building design work.”
