“It is always a great opportunity to experience the industry before finishing the final year, where the knowledge can be applied and updated during the work experience, and more importantly it helps to choose a right industry to work for life. I have chosen Tube Lines to do my placement because of its excellent reputation in the railway industry. The early delivery of station modification works and new innovations such as PCRIDs keeps attracting me to join them, as I can see this company is well structured and traditional up-to-date.”
“During my stay with Tube Lines, I was involved in station modernization and cooling the tube projects. My role was to manage the project progress from design to completion, providing suitable documentation, arranging on-site inspection and attending meetings with both London Underground and our contractors. One of my projects was to install 16 evaporative cooling units on the Jubilee line disused platform at Charing Cross station. As it is one of the new technology introduced to London Underground, we were required to test the system before the actual trial. The mechanism behind it was complicated, from the power load of the equipment to the pressure test of the system, all the details are vital. The staff are very friendly and helpful, they are willing to teach and direct you through the project cycle. I also attended regular site visits at night, from pre-installation to completion, to make sure the devices are working safely and as per design. The night shifts I spent in the station are the most exciting and enjoyable time I have ever had, as it gives me chance to learn the mechanism in a practical way. It is amazing to discover the cooling effect of the installation, and more importantly how the moisture affects the track and the station asset.
“We know that no one is born with knowledge, every incident we experienced is part of our learning curve. The major reason why I love Tube Lines is it provides me with opportunities to take responsibility as well as a variety of training offered. Throughout the placement program, I attended training in different aspects including track, health and safety, construction and environment. We also have the opportunity to attend different exhibitions and conferences which related to railway/engineering, to understand the latest technology and the news in the industry, which I have found very valuable. The company gives us the opportunity and it is our liability to get hold of it. I am very glad about what I have done in Tube Lines and I am proud of it!”
